Managed to cut the barrel and routered the edge. I also trimmed the top part which when finished will be put back as a cover to stop sunlight coming in and mozzies, it will also act as a base to put a pot plant on top.
The plastic mesh you see down the bottom (partial bread tray used in bakeries) has also been trimmed and fitted and will be used later to prop up the bio filter media off the bottom so the water can easily enter the chamber and swirl around.
